Gondwana Nights

Gondwana Nights

The Gondwana Observatory is a feature of the Australian Age of Dinosaurs near Winton, Qld, and one of four certified Dark Sky places in Australia. We had a visit there in September 2023, and really enjoyed the clear dark skies that can be found in outback Queensland.

The Gondwana Observatory is an open-air space where tours of the universe are conducted by astronomers several times weekly for much of the year. The location is perhaps the first Bortle Class 1 location I’ve visited, and gave me a deep appreciation for the value of a truly dark sky. We could see the Emu so clearly, and the Milky Way core appeared to be on fire.

A visit to outback Queensland is highly recommended for astro photographers everywhere!
