The View from Fan's Horizon
When we visited Coonabarabran in northern NSW in November we wanted to do a hike in the Warrumbungle National Park, a fabulous location for both landscape photography and bushwalking.
With only half a day for a walk, we didn't really have the time to do one of the big walks, like the Grand High Tops, or the Breadknife Trail. So we chose the relatively short but challenging hike to Fan's Horizon.
At just over 4km round trip from Pincham Car Park, there are 1,000 steps to ascend over 200m. But the view from the top is superb.
At the top the path splits briefly, straight ahead takes you to the horizon view, looking out over the magnificent Belougery Spire, the famous Breadknife and Crater Bluff (left to right in the image above).
After spending some time here, we went back to the fork in the trail and continued a few hundred metres to a second overlook, this time taking in the magnificent Bluff Mountain.
I'd like to go back up to Fan's Horizon again to take in a sunset, or even to do some astro photography on a moonless night—the Warrumbungle National Park being Australia's first Dark Sky Park.
