Winton Frontier
Winton is a birthplace of Qantas1, Australia’s national airline. In 1920, Winton was then, as it is today, a frontier town in outback Queensland and the birth of air travel connected it to the world. Winton is also connected to the universe as the home of the Jump Up, Australia’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary.
This monument to Qantas is one of three around the township, each situated for a setting western sun. There are also some old vehicles and farm machinery on the southern edge of town providing foreground interest for night sky images.
We had a wonderful visit to Winton, visiting The Australian Age Of Dinosaurs by day and returning to visit the Gondwana Observatory that night. The dark skies in the outback were simply spectacular.
